I have a network printer with a print server built in. I need help configuring it. When the computer reboots, the IP address resets, and then the computer can't find it anymore.
I can't set it for static IP address because i have wireless laptops on the network that need a dynamic IP address.
Can anyone help?

Re: Setting MAC addresses
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 11:49 AMUsually you can use both static and dynamic IP addresses at the same time. Dynamic usually uses the top half of the ip range (x.x.x.100 - x.x.x.150). So you would just set it up as a static IP to use x.x.x.50 (usually 192.168.1.50) default gateway would be x.x.x.1 (192.168.1.1).
Hope this helps. -

Re: Setting MAC addresses
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 9:21 PMI was under the impression that a router could not be set up for both static and dynamic IP addresses. Should I add a second router to my network? -

Re: Setting MAC addresses
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 9:23 PMEvery router I've known could be set up that way. Read the manual. Cheaper than buying a second router, and easier to configure.

Re: Setting MAC addresses
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 9:25 PMMy router allows both. Both of my pcs are setup with static ips and the laptops (and psp) connect with dynamic. In your routers settings there should be a place to set specific IPs to specific machines and allow dynamic IPs.
What is the make and model of your router? -

Re: Setting MAC addresses
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 10:25 PMThanks for the info guys. I have a Linksys router/WAP/hub combo device. Is there a website you'd recommend for giving me a step by step walkthru on how to do this?
Thanks for all of your help. -

Re: Setting MAC addresses
Tue, July 25, 2006 - 6:31 AMHell, Linksys offers free phone tech support. I'd also go to their site and read through their faqs and their manual for the router.

Re: Setting MAC addresses
Tue, July 25, 2006 - 11:54 AMAny device can be set up for a static IP, you just don't want to put it in the DHCP pool of addresses. As long as there is no conflict it works fine.
