You can use a crossover cable and connect them together using the ethernet ports on both (assuming the desktop has one, which it should)

If you plan on sharing internet between the two then get a router (standard routers are pretty cheap now) and use regular ethernet cables.

As far as using a tv for the laptop, pretty much you have to have a video out on the laptop (Yellow RCA plug)

of course, if your just going to use the desktop JUST for backing-up the laptop, take the hard-drive out of the desktop and put it into a usb external harddrive enclosure and use that.

If you use a crossover cable, you have to manually configure the IP address.

And don't forget to share the drives. Also, if running XP. disable the firewall.

Actually, if you use a crossover cable, then most modern OSes will default to the 169.something netblock after giving up on waiting for a DHCP server to respond. And then they'll both be able to see each other.

Sure, not an ideal solution, but it does the job.

If you have a wireless router for your laptop for internet, you can hook up the other machine to the router too. File sharing is fairly easy in windows. In order to hook up a TV to your laptop, you need an S-video out connector on it.
